    The Problem

We all know this: the climate crisis is here, and we have a big problem. Part of that problem is plastics, specifically the single use plastics that we didn’t have in 1949, and can’t seem to live without in 2023.

In 2023, about 380 million metric tons of plastic—about the weight of all of humanity living today—will be created from liquid fossil fuels and thousands of chemical additives, many of them known carcinogens.  Much of this new plastic will enjoy a single use (that plastic bottle of water? That vegetable wrapped in cellophane at the grocery store?) before heading to a landfill (less than 10% is recycled), where it will not break down for hundreds of years or longer. The health consequences of this plastic are staggering, to humans and to all of life on earth.

    What we are doing

    It’s not complicated—but it isn’t easy, either.

In July 2023, we are joining with more than 140 million others across the globe, promoting, and working together, to live a Plastic Free July—doing our best to cut back on the single use plastics that are filling our oceans, parks, neighborhoods, and landfills. We are joining the international movement Plastic Free July, created in Australia.

We know before we start that perfection is all but impossible, as single use plastics are everywhere—but we pledge to do our best in July. Please read our pledge, and sign!
